Weight Loss

Weight loss comes under the topic of "Weight Control", because we are concerned with the loss and MAINTENANCE of loss of weight. This is a multi-faceted problem, and a good program involves diet, exercise and stress reduction techniques. Chinese acupressure and digestive aid exercises are also useful tools in the battle with weight loss

Acupuncture is an ADJUNCT therapy. It is not a panacea or a wonder cure in the treatment of weight control. But, acupuncture is effective in making it easier to lose and maintain that loss if the patient is willing to change their lifestyle. The exact mechanism by which acupuncture works is unknown but we know that acupuncture needles inserted into specific points on the body and in the ear release endorphins which have a calming and relaxing effect that makes it easier to deal with stress, frustration and anxiety that can trigger overeating and bingeing on fattening foods. Also endorphins affect the digestive and hormonal systems so acupuncture can help rebalance the organ systems that are running too fast- or in this case too slow—i.e., the metabolism and the will power.

Burn Calories in a 30 Minute Sunlighten Sauna Session!

“Saunas are an important aid to weight loss and thyroid repair because as you lose weight, fat tissue releases stored toxins such as PCBs and pesticides.”

-Dr. Mark Hyman, author of NY Times best selling book “Ultrametabolism” and Sunlighten customer.

Studies have shown a 30 minute far infrared sauna session can burn up to 200-600 calories . As the body works to cool itself while using a far infrared sauna, there is a substantial increase in heart rate, cardiac output and metabolic rate. Blood flow during whole body hyperthermia is reported to rise from a normal 5-7 quarts per minute to as much as 13 quarts per minute. Journal of the American Medical Association, August 1981

Infrared light is part of the sun's invisible spectrum. The far-infrared light used in infrared saunas can penetrate human tissue up to three inches deep to bring several health benefits. Infrared saunas are safe because they do not require as high a temperature as hot rock and steam saunas. In fact, all humans send and receive far infrared waves with a wavelength of 6 to 20 microns and an optimal range of 7 to 14 microns. Water molecules resonate within this range at 9.4 microns, which makes sense as we are almost 70% water. The 7-14 micron wavelength appears to have special regenerative effects on the body, allowing for a release of cellular toxins including mercury, aluminum, cholesterol, and other toxic gases. Studies have also found a great reduction in pain from far-infrared sauna use. While heat has been used for centuries to treat pain, research has confirmed its benefits. A six-month study involving 371 patients were given either the maximum recommended dosage of ibuprofen (e.g. Advil) and acetominophen (Tylenol) or low level heat therapy for two days to treat low back pain. The low level heat was found to be more effective at relieving pain during the first day of treatment and to continue to relieve pain for more than 48 hours after the completion of treatment than the oral analgesics. Medical research has found success in using infrared saunas for the following pain conditions:

  • TMJ arthritis
  • disc protrusion-related neuralgia
  • brain contusion
  • tight shoulders
  • spinal cord shock
  • muscle tension
  • shoulder pain
  • bursitis
  • muscle spasms
  • low back pain
  • compression fracture
  • post-exercise muscle pain
  • arthritis: gouty, rheumatoid, traumatic
  • adhesions
  • joint stiffness
